Current Tatkal Ticket Rules

At present, Tatkal tickets for AC classes such as 2A, 3A, CC, EC, and 3E can be booked from 10:00 AM, one day before the journey. For Non-AC classes like Sleeper (SL), First Class (FC), and Second Sitting (2S), booking opens at 11:00 AM on the previous day.

Tatkal bookings are subject to additional charges, typically between 10% to 30% of the base fare. These charges vary depending on the travel class and are non-refundable in most cases.

No Official Change Confirmed

While social media and several media reports have suggested changes in Tatkal Ticket Rules, including revised booking hours and agent restrictions, Indian Railways has denied these claims. There are no proposed updates to timings for any class or Premium Tatkal bookings.

The rules governing agent bookings also remain the same. Travel agents can continue to book Tatkal tickets as per current guidelines, without any new restrictions.

Rumored Changes Not Yet Valid

Despite the official denial, some platforms continue to circulate unconfirmed changes. These include AC ticket bookings starting at 11:00 AM instead of 10:00 AM and Non-AC tickets at 12:00 PM instead of 11:00 AM.

There are also unverified mentions of Premium Tatkal bookings starting at 10:30 AM, and agents being barred from booking in the first two hours. But none of these changes have been implemented officially.

Cancellation and Refund Rules

As per current Tatkal Ticket Rules, confirmed Tatkal tickets are non-refundable. Even if you cancel the ticket hours before the journey, no refund will be processed.

However, waitlisted Tatkal tickets, when cancelled, attract a cancellation fee. For example, ₹60 per person is charged for 3AC and ₹65 for 2AC tickets. A convenience fee of ₹35 and 2% transaction charges are also deducted.

In some exceptional cases, like train delays of over three hours or rerouted services, passengers may be eligible for a full refund, including Tatkal charges. These cases are rare and need to be verified at the time of cancellation.

How to Book Tatkal Tickets

Tatkal tickets can be booked both online and over the counter. Online bookings can be made through the official IRCTC website or authorized platforms like Paytm, ixigo, and redRail.

Booking times remain 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for Non-AC, one day before the date of travel. Each ticket can include a maximum of four passengers per PNR.

For those booking at railway stations, Tatkal tickets are available through the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters. It’s advisable to reach early, as queues begin forming well before the counters open.

What Passengers Should Keep in Mind

With frequent rumours and unverified news, it’s easy for passengers to be misled. Indian Railways has made it clear that Tatkal Ticket Rules are unchanged. Official websites and announcements remain the best source of updated information.

Passengers should avoid relying on viral messages or unconfirmed websites when planning their journey. Being aware of the current booking times and refund policies helps avoid last-minute confusion or losses.
