Indian Railways is all set to introduce a game-changing upgrade to long-distance travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train from Delhi-Howrah route. This new high-speed sleeper variant is built for overnight journeys and is packed with modern features.

The first prototype of this 16-coach train has already completed successful trials and is expected to hit the tracks commercially very soon.

Built for Speed and Comfort

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train from Delhi-Howrah route is designed to run at speeds of up to 180 km/h, although its operational speed will be capped at 160 km/h. With faster acceleration and better average speeds, it’s likely to outperform existing trains like the Rajdhani Express.

The train aims to shorten travel time between major cities and offer a far more comfortable journey for overnight passengers.

Sleeper Configuration with Modern Amenities

This train comes with 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and 1 First Class AC coach. It is specifically designed to cater to overnight travelers, making it ideal for long routes like Delhi to Howrah.

Some standout features include automatic doors, plush berths, onboard WiFi, emergency communication systems, and aircraft-style interiors.

Make in India Achievement

Developed under the Make in India initiative, the Vande Bharat Sleeper train is a showcase of Indian engineering talent. It also includes centralized coach monitoring, CCTV surveillance, and modern safety features.

This marks a significant shift in Indian Railways’ approach to combining speed with comfort and technology.

Future Plans and Production

The initial rollout includes a production plan for nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains between April and December 2025. Full-scale production of extended 24-coach versions is targeted for 2026–27.

Eventually, Indian Railways plans to launch up to 200 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains across key long-distance routes.
