India is on the brink of a railway revolution, and one of the most exciting projects in the pipeline is the Mumbai–Hyderabad Bullet Train. This ambitious plan is set to completely change the way people travel between Mumbai and Hyderabad, slashing travel time from 14–16 hours to just around 3 hours. A Game-Changing Route Across Maharashtra and Telangana
The proposed Mumbai–Hyderabad Bullet Train corridor will cover a distance of about 767 kilometers. The route includes 11 stations connecting some of the most prominent and growing urban areas in the country. These stations will be located in Bandra Kurla Complex (Mumbai), Navi Mumbai, Lonavala, Pune, Kurkumb/Daund, Akluj, Pandharpur, Solapur, Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), Zaheerabad, and finally Hyderabad. This setup will not only make inter-city travel faster but will also boost connectivity for many smaller towns along the way.
High Speeds, Short Journeys
The Mumbai–Hyderabad Bullet Train is being designed to run at a top speed of 350 km/h, with a regular operating speed of around 320 km/h. On average, the train will maintain a speed close to 250 km/h, which makes the 3-hour journey possible. That’s a major jump from the long, tiring overnight train rides we’re used to today.
Cutting-Edge Technology and Safety
This high-speed rail line will be built using modern technology. It will run on standard gauge tracks (1435 mm) with 25 kV AC electric overhead lines. The trains will be equipped with state-of-the-art digital signaling (DS-ATC) and a special safety system called UrEDAS, which can detect earthquakes and automatically stop the train if needed. Each train will be capable of carrying around 750 passengers, ensuring efficient mass transit.
Infrastructure That Matches Global Standards
The route will feature a combination of elevated, underground, and at-grade tracks, making sure the train can maintain high speeds safely and smoothly. The corridor is planned to align with major highways and may even connect with the existing Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train route near Thane. This level of integration will make it easier for passengers to switch routes and expand the benefits of high-speed rail travel.
Where Does the Project Stand Now?
The Mumbai–Hyderabad Bullet Train is currently in its early planning stages. Although it was announced in 2019 as one of six high-speed rail corridors in India, physical construction has not yet started. Since October 2020, various surveys and studies have been taking place, but official approvals and final tenders are still pending. The estimated completion date for this corridor is far into the future — around the year 2051.

A Look at India’s Bullet Train Timeline
While the Mumbai–Hyderabad Bullet Train is still waiting for approval, India’s first bullet train project — the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route — is further along. Initially scheduled to be completed by 2023, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad project was delayed due to land acquisition issues and the COVID-19 pandemic. As of early 2024, construction is progressing, with 295.5 kilometers of pier work and 153 kilometers of viaducts completed. However, rail tracks are yet to be laid.
The first stretch between Surat and Bilimora is expected to be ready by August 2026. Final completion of the full corridor is still uncertain, pending the award of all tenders.

Once completed, the Mumbai–Hyderabad Bullet Train will be a major leap forward in India’s transport infrastructure.
