The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has officially clarified that there will be no nationwide rollout of satellite tolling from May 1, 2025. The existing FASTag system will remain in place across all toll plazas.
There had been growing speculation that FASTag might be replaced by a GPS-based toll collection system. However, the government has now confirmed that there is no such move on the cards right now.
The current FASTag system, which uses RFID technology, will continue to be the primary mode of toll collection for all highways. Drivers are advised to keep using FASTag as usual.
What’s Changing?
Although full satellite tolling is not happening, the government is introducing a new hybrid toll collection system at select toll plazas. This is called the ANPR-FASTag-based barrier-less tolling model.
It combines Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras with FASTag scanners to allow vehicles to pass without stopping. This system is being tested in limited locations for now.
If successful, this model may be expanded in the future. However, the existing toll booths and FASTag system will continue as usual across the rest of the country.
Big Changes Ahead: What to Expect from the Upcoming Toll Policy in India
Why Satellite Tolling is Delayed
The idea of satellite tolling—where tolls are calculated based on GPS location—is still being tested. But it faces several challenges before a full rollout can happen.
One of the biggest issues is privacy. Continuous GPS tracking of vehicles can raise concerns about how location data is stored and used. The government is currently studying the matter carefully.
There are also technical problems. For satellite tolling to work, every vehicle would need a special tracking device, and the satellite navigation system must be fully reliable—even in remote areas.
Trials Continue, But No Timeline Yet
Location-based tolling trials are currently happening on a few routes, including parts of Karnataka and the Delhi-Mumbai expressway. But no official decision has been taken on where and when it will be launched nationally.
The government says it will only move forward after resolving all privacy concerns and ensuring the technology is fully ready. As of now, there is no confirmed date for the rollout of satellite tolling in India.
For the time being, FASTag will continue to be the only toll collection method in use. Motorists should stay updated with official announcements for any future developments.
