Reports of UPI service downtime are flooding in from across India, leaving millions of users unable to make payments or transfer funds. The outage, which began around 7:40 PM IST today, has affected major platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, causing widespread frustration.
UPI Service Down With Nationwide Outage
Downdetector, a platform that tracks service disruptions, recorded a sharp rise in complaints. About 83% of users reported facing payment failures, 13% had issues with fund transfers, and 4% experienced app malfunctions. This sudden disruption has highlighted the heavy reliance on UPI for daily transactions.
Several major banks have been hit hard by the UPI service down situation. State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank are among the most affected, with users reporting difficulties completing transactions. Complaints have also poured in from customers of ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bank of India, and Bank of Baroda.
As the outage drags on, frustrated users have taken to social media to share their experiences and seek answers. Despite the uproar, there has been no official statement from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) or the affected banks about the cause or expected resolution time.
UPI outages are not common, but they do happen. In May 2024 alone, banks faced 31 instances of downtime, leading to over 47 hours of payment gateway disruptions. While the NPCI infrastructure is generally reliable, experts suggest that outdated technology at some banks might be contributing to these occasional failures.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been working to reduce these incidents. Efforts have brought downtime below 1% in recent months, but peak transaction periods still put immense pressure on the system. Sudden surges, like those during market fluctuations or festival seasons, can overwhelm the network.
For now, the UPI service down situation continues, with users left in limbo. Many are hoping for a quick resolution, as UPI has become a crucial part of everyday life for millions. Businesses, commuters, and online shoppers are all feeling the impact.
